Waterways is a water resources engineering and environmental consulting firm specializing in the planning, assessment, and design of surface water restoration projects. With offices in Santa Cruz, California, and Portland, Oregon, we work on projects of all sizes across the West Coast. Coweeman Headwaters Habitat Enhancement
The project was divided into four phases given the scale of the effort with Phase 1 completed in summer 2019 and Phase 2 completed in summer 2021. Phase 3 will be constructed in summer 2022 and Phase 4 will be completed in summer 2023. Waterways role included mapping, site selection, wood sourcing, development of engineering designs, assistance with permitting, and construction phase services.
Lower Pescadero Creek Multi-Objective Management Plan and Designs
The 81-mile Pescadero-Butano watershed is the largest coastal watershed between San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay and contains one of the most important anadromous fish populations in central California. The San Mateo Resource Conservation District (SMRCD), one of the key stakeholders involved in resource planning in the watershed, hired Waterways to develop a science-based Lower Pescadero Creek Multi-Objective Management Plan for the 3.2-mile-long reach upstream of the Pescadero Lagoon, which flows through agricultural land and the town of Pescadero.
Faith Valley Meadow Restoration
American Rivers performed an assessment of Alpine Meadows in the Carson River watershed, and identified Faith Valley as its highest priority meadow restoration due to its impairments and its popularity with recreational users for fishing, hiking, and camping. American Rivers hired Waterways to complete a baseline conditions assessment and develop designs for habitat improvement. The baseline assessment included topographic survey, modeling, geomorphic mapping, botanical and other assessments. The assessment determined that the primary cause of impairment in Faith Valley is channel incision and associated detrimental impacts, including bank erosion, lowered groundwater table, and degradation of meadow plant assemblages. Much of this impairment can be traced to recent collapses of large beaver dam complexes in the meadow.
Klaskanine Hatchery Fish Passage Improvements
The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) Klaskanine Fish Hatchery is located on the North Fork of the Klaskanine River in Clatsop County, Oregon. The hatchery produces a variety of stocks for sport fishing and helps supplement salmon for the gill net fishery out of Youngs Bay. This includes 1.4 million Coho (September-October return), 500,000 Select Area Brights from Rogue egg stocks (Fall return), 2.5 million Tule Chinook (September return time), and approximately 40,000 winter Steelhead. Fish reaching the hatchery, including both wild and hatchery stock, were prevented from moving through the hatchery reach, and upstream, by the presence of multiple intake structures.
Trout Creek Restoration
The Town of Truckee partnered with the Truckee River Watershed Council and Truckee Development Corporation in a multi-objective redevelopment project to revitalize the downtown and the adjacent rail yard, reduce flood risks for businesses and residents, and improve the natural environment. The focus of this project was the restoration of Trout Creek, a tributary to the Truckee River, and development of open space that connects residents and visitors of the Truckee area to important natural resources. Waterways lead a team of consultants tasked with enhancing habitat values and functions of Trout Creek.
Linnton Mitigation Site
The Linnton Mitigation Site is in the Linnton neighborhood of Portland, Oregon along the west bank of the Willamette River. This industrial property was previously used as a plywood mill before discontinuing operation in 2001. The site previously conveyed flow from two creeks via culverts to the Willamette River, Linnton Creek and another unnamed perennial stream.
